Last August, a picture of John Unger and his dog Schoep in the waters of Lake Superior was shared online, and quickly went viral. Unger would take Schoep into the lake every evening to ease the pain of his severe arthritis.
Millions of people were touched by the image, and many donated to Schoep’s treatment, which allowed Unger to have a little more time with his beloved pet.
Schoep turned 20 years of age on June 15th, he died 26 days later.
On Thursday, John took to the pair’s Facebook page and posted a picture of a pawprint in the sand, saying:
“I Breathe But I Can't Catch My Breath...
Schoep passed yesterday
more information in the days ahead”
Just two days before, John had shared this gorgeous snap of Schoep in a meadow, saying:
A fantastic day we had. Up early to walk and go to the beach, eat, nap, go shopping, eat, laundry, go to the beach, eat, nap and one more walk. All without the humidity, thats what made it fantastic - especially for Schoep! (pic) Schoep falling asleep in the sunshine. Have a great night - John
