Kesha’s mum Rosemary Patricia "Pebe" Sebert has spoken out for the first time about the Dr Luke scandal, speaking candidly of the effect the producer’s actions have had on her daughter.
In an interview with Billboard, Pebe said that the producer psychologically controlled her daughter from the beginning of her contract, saying:
"She was like a prisoner. It was like someone who beats you every day and hangs you from a chain and then comes in and gives you a piece of bread. Luke would say, 'You look nice today,' and send her into hysterics of happiness because she was programmed to expect nothing but abuse."
The interview comes just weeks after a judge ruled that Kesha could not break her contract with the music producer Dr Luke because it had been heavily negotiated and it wouldn't be commercially reasonable.
It is reported that the wave of public backlash from both celebrities and fans alike during the #FreeKesha movement has put pressure on Sony to remove the producer from their label – but Kesha is still tied to working with the 42-year old.
Pebe added:
"Kesha's allowed to work with another producer.
"But Luke gets to approve them. He gets to approve of anyone she works with. He has final say over everything. Dr Luke basically owns Kesha until her death."
Kesha’s mum says she regrets that she waited so long to go to the police, telling Billboard:
"Looking back, I don't know why we didn't go to the police.
"Kesha told me not to do anything. She said, 'Mom, I just want to sing. I don't want to be a rape-case victim. I just want to get my music out.' I didn't follow my instincts."
Pebe confirmed that Kesha is starting to feel peace since going public with her abuse, and that she has written more than 30 songs and is ready to go:
"She wasn't comfortable with having to do this, but I think she realized as this thing progressed that she can advocate for sexual abuse or other things.
"The fact that she is at peace with that has really been healing."
