Dublin City Council is today discussing plans that could see Dublin’s Millennium Spire named in honour of the late Nelson Mandela.
The eight-man committee will today discuss the proposed “Nelson Mandela Pillar” before deciding whether or not to pursue the idea further.
According to The Irish Times, a special committee called the Commemorative Naming Committee, will be discussing the issue, after it was raised by Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn.
The suggestion was made by Fiachra Ó Luain, who wrote to the Lord Mayor saying that it was a “fitting tribute” to Mandela.
Mandela was made a freeman of Dublin city in 1988, and Ó Luain pointed out that The Spire was in close proximately to Dunnes Stores, where workers boycotted food from apartheid South Africa back in the 80s.
The Irish Times reports that councillor Dermot Lacey pointed out that there was already an existing rule that states that major landmarks can only be dedicated to people who have deceased for at least 20 years but that “everything was up for discussion”.
