The Volkswagen Golf has been named Europe's Car of the Year.
The honour, (results of which are decided upon by 58 automotive journalists from 22 countries), came as judges awarded the VW Golf 414 votes, well ahead of its nearest competition. The Subaru BRZ was second with 202 votes and the Volvo V40 third with 189 votes.
The Golf was first introduced to the market in 1974 and has only recently been redesigned – it’s now in its seventh generation. The third generation Golf previously picked up the prestigious title in 1992.
Overall balance and outstanding achievements in safety, fuel efficiency, dynamics and comfort were all key to the judges in making their decisions.
The announcement was made at a presentation event on the eve of the opening press day at the Geneva motor show. Speaking about the honour Ulrich Hackenberg, VW board member responsible for research, said “I am a little bit proud... It’s a big honour to get this prize.”
