So you’re driving along the road just minding your own business when you hear a noise. But it’s not just any noise, it’s the noise of a rock hitting off your windscreen and leaving a crack. What do you do?
To be completely honest there’s not much you yourself can really do when your windscreen gets cracked but there are a few steps you should take.
1. Pull over and inspect the damage. Traditionally if the crack is more than 12 inches you will need to get the windscreen replaced. If it is less than this, you might get away with a simple repair. Either way it is best to get the crack dealt with as soon as possible so call for roadside assistance.
2. If you do decide to drive off before getting the windscreen repaired, make sure the crack isn’t in your line of vision or obstructing you in any way. (If it is, do NOT drive.) If you do drive off and have clear tape in the car, put a piece over the crack to prevent dust getting into it and keep your driving distance short.
3. Avoid hot and cold temperatures if you cannot get the damage fixed immediately. Keep the windscreen out of the sun and don’t blast the air-conditioning. Temperature extremes can increase the damage and could be the difference between you getting it repaired or replaced.
4. Be gentle. Whether it’s when you are driving home or closing the door of the car, take great care. If you hit a bump or slam your door shut, it could make the crack bigger and again could change how much work needs done and how much money you have to pay.
5. Don’t ignore it. Fix your windscreen as quickly as possible. Contact your insurance provider to see if it will be covered. Failing that, go to the car dealer. Chances are you will have to pay out to get the problem fixed but it is safer and probably cheaper on the long-term to get it done immediately.
