It’s not all that common (thank goodness) but it is possible for the brakes in your car to stop working altogether while you’re driving. And while you can’t fix the problem there are a few steps you can take to increase your and your car’s chances of survival.
If the brakes in your car ever fail or cut out, the most important thing is not to panic. But there are some other things you can also do.
1. There are many causes of brake failure. One is an obstruction under the pedal so either get a passenger to check if there’s an object preventing you from pressing down on the pedal or dislodge it with your own foot. To avoid this don’t leave cans or bottles rolling around on the floor of your car. Another possibility is a problem with the brake fluid levels so if the pedal feels soft you can pump it hard in the hope that the brake fluid will build up and in turn your brakes will start working again.
2. Your main priority is to bring the car to a stop. To do this, carefully downshift through the gears. Do not put it into neutral, as then the engine will not brake, and do not turn off the engine, because then your power-steering will go. If you can, make your way across the lanes so that you can pull into the hard shoulder. Gradually your car should come to a stop. Once your car is travelling at a speed under 50mph you can also use your handbrake but only do so as a last resort and with great care. The last thing you want to do is flip your car or cause a collision.
3. While you are waiting for your vehicle to slow down and stop, put on your hazard-warning lights and if necessary use your horn to warn other drivers of your presence. If they know you are having difficulties, they will be able to manoeuvre around you.
4. When you do eventually stop, don’t take the risk of driving off again even if it seems that your brakes have started working. Call for help and get the problem checked out. The next time you might not be so lucky.
