The wind is known for messing up your hair and breaking your umbrella when you're walking along on the street but it can also be destructive for drivers.
All sorts of issues arise when you're on the road and there are strong winds but, as with most extreme weather conditions, there are precautions you can take to make your journey as safe as it possibly can be.
1. Check your tyre pressures and tread. To be honest you should be doing this on a regular basis anyway however it is especially important when the weather is temperamental. Tyre inflation and tread directly affect the grip your car has on the road.
Over-inflated or under-inflated tyres can cause your car to slide on the road, even more so when it's windy, which can lead to an accident. Consult your vehicle manual for information on your tyre pressures and remember your tread should be at least 1.66mm.

2. Reduce your speed . Strong crosswinds will cause your car to shift on the road which means you will find steering harder than usual. Driving more slowly will not stop it completely but it will give you more control over your car. It will also give your more time to react to any objects that have fallen onto the road or have been dislodged by the wind.
3. If you can, avoid high-sided vehicles. If this isn't possible, take great care when passing them as they are extremely vulnerable in windy conditions. Leave as much space as you can between you and them. Also make sure to increase and adhere to greater stopping distances.

4. Be prepared for obstructions on the road and falling debris especially if you are travelling on country roads or the motorway. There could be a fallen tree around the corner or something might have fallen off a lorry. You need to make sure you have full visibility when driving and that you are concentrating. Windy weather should not be underestimated and can be just as deadly as icy conditions.
