Sororities and fraternities are a massive element of college life for many American students, but they have recently been gathering a bad reputation, from tales of hazing rituals gone wrong to date rape incidents at house parties.
One student of Syracuse University has decided to speak out about why she left her (unnamed) sorority in a powerful video uploaded to YouTube.
PR student Alex Purdy told The Daily Dot: 'There's been people who reached out saying they had a similar experience. But there's also people who've spoken out saying they didn’t, but they still support the message and recognize that it still goes on at some places.'
She maintains that the video was not made out of spite, but was just a reflection of her own experiences. She speaks about how she wanted to join a sorority to have a sense of belonging. 'It seemed like a positive experience for me.'
'I was so upset to see the way that women were treating other women.' She heard of girls being told to 'dress sluttier' for college parties, and spoke about the weight loss supplements many members took.
She still hopes that there can be a reexamination of sorority culture so improvements can be made.
