If you've heard the term pegging recently and felt confused by what exactly it means... you're not the only one. The term which came into mass circulation in the past year seems to be cropping up more and more. If you, like myself, tune into the hit TV series, Broad City, then you'll be fairly familiar with the term and credit the programme for teaching you exactly what it's all about. If not, I will explain it for you. Basically, pegging is when a woman wears a strap-on dildo and penetrates her partner anally. Quite common amongst same-sex couples compared to heterosexual couples but now, becoming more popular according to Lovehoney - with sales of strap-ons up by nearly 200 percent in the last year. In heterosexual couples pegging is seen as reverse sex, flipping the "norm" and basically seeing the woman "bang" the man to put it ever so politely. Now, the idea of pegging is certainly niche with the term only really becoming more heard of now. But, sexual phycologists believe that pegging can be a good experience between a couple, to demonstrate a liberating change in roles. Speaking to Marie Claire, Dr Galye Brewer, sexual behaviour and relationship psychologist from the University of Liverpool explains:

"Traditionally, we have this idea that it’s the man’s role to take control in a sexual relationship, and that women are generally more submissive in the bedroom. Therefore, an act like pegging can be an interesting reminder to men of how vulnerable women can be during sex, and the trust they are placing in the man when they do have (vaginal or anal) intercourse with them. There’s also a trust-building element in introducing any new sex move to a relationship."

Dr Brewer also explains that it can be a great moment of empowerment for a woman in a heterosexual relationship and something which you shouldn't feel embarrassed to discuss with your partner. She believes it's good to "allow women to feel empowered to take control and not feel that sex is something that happens to them." She also explained that you would be surprised by how many men are also "up for the idea" and enjoy the feeling of a woman taking over. It goes without saying it's not everyone's cup of tea and certainly something which should never be pushed upon your partner - nevertheless, it is always good to be informed and aware of other ways you can spice up the bedroom.
