The news follows strong rumours that forthcoming Bond film Spectre will be Craig's last.
Lewis has now taken over as front-runner for the role from former favourite Idris Elba and other contenders Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill, along with Irish star Michael Fassbender.
Elba said earlier this year: "If there was ever any chance of me getting Bond, it's gone".
Craig will return as the seductive spy in Spectre, due in cinemas this November.
