The station is projected to lose €20million by the end of 2016
The Irish Sun have reported that Republic of Telly and Reality Bites are facing the axe as RTÉ aims to reduce costs.
With expected losses of €20million being projected by the end of 2016, it appears that the most recent episode of Republic of Telly, which aired last night, will be its last.
The show that's hosted by Kevin McGahern employs a large amount of freelance staff thus making their employment easier to cut than those with long-term contracts, according to The Irish Sun.
Speaking with the newspaper, an RTE spokesperson said: “No decision has been made on whether Republic of Telly will be returning in the spring. We will review the performance of Republic of Telly and decide whether to re-commission it for another series in 2017.”
Reality Bites is another show whose future is in jeopardy. This news comes after the station recently announced that they plan on ceasing production of their Young People's programmes.
The Republic of Telly has been on the air since 2009 and it has helped to launch the careers of The Rubberbandits, Dermot Whelan, Bernard O'Shea, Jennifer Maguire and many more.
