If you grew up in a household in Ireland where singing was a regular occurrence, then you’re probably familiar with the song ‘The Green Fields of France,’ which is sometimes referred to simply as ‘Willie McBride’.
A song about the death of a young soldier in World War I, it was a hit for the Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur back in the late 1970s, reaching number one and remaining in the charts for months afterwards.
On the Late Late Show on Friday night, Finbar Furey gave it a whirl once again with Christy Dignam of Aslan for company and what followed was a spellbinding few minutes of television.
The pair sat on the couch beside Ryan Tubridy instead of the usual music stage, which made for a more intimate performance.
Whatever about in the studio audience, we’d say you could hear a pin drop in homes throughout the country so captivating was the performance by two bona fide legends of the Irish music scene.
If you haven’t heard it yet, give it a listen and then listen again; it really is quite something.
