Dr Feelgood star Wilko Johnson is recovering after a nine-hour cancer operation. The legendary guitarist was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late 2012, but declined treatment when he was told that it was terminal. However, recent tests showed that the disease was not as aggressive as previously thought and he underwent surgery to remove the tumour from his system. "We're sure you will be as delighted as we are that after making excellent progress at Addenbrooke's [Hospital] over the last few weeks, Wilko is now convalescing back at his home" a message on his Facebook page said. "Naturally after such an extensive procedure, Wilko is extremely tired, and it will take him some time to recuperate, so he asks that you respect his privacy, but we had to share this incredibly positive news. "On behalf of Wilko and his family, another huge thank you for your magnificent support over recent months - it really means a great deal to Wilko - and please join us in thanking the staff at Addenbrooke's for everything they have achieved in some extremely difficult circumstances”. Johnson went on to play with Ian Dury And The Blockheads after leaving Dr Feelgood in the 1970s, and then had a lengthy solo career. Despite his illness, the musician managed to continue to make music, recently scoring a top three album with The Who's Roger Daltrey called Going Back Home, as well as pursue an acting career. He starred in four episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones as mute executioner Ilyn Payne.
