Although the Rising centenary commemorations have been and gone, the real anniversary is in fact tomorrow, April 24th.
Siomha and Órnait Ní Aonghusa are two sisters that form the band Sisterix. They got in touch with us today to share their stunning cover of The Foggy Dew, one of the key songs of the 1916 Rising, featuring their cousin Natalie Ní Chasaide.
"With the official anniversary of the 1916 Rising coming up this Sunday, we wanted to mark it with a strong female rendition of the battle lament."
We asked Siomha how the band had come to be:
"We've been playing music together since we were really young. We have a background in traditional irish music but now we have our own band called Sisterix, where we write our own original folk- pop songs."
"My sister Ornait and I spent the last 2 years living in Australia and travelled with our instruments, often playing gigs for a bed and a meal, often being saved from destitution by our singing voices and instruments. But we came back to Ireland to take the music seriously and try to establish ourselves as a proper band."
Their Facebook page is here, and you can watch the stunning performance below.
