Almost 25 years after the release of kids' movie Matilda, a new version is in the works.

The 1996 classic, directed by Danny Devito and based on the book by Roald Dahl, brought to life the story of a neglected but gifted little girl who discovers that she has psychic abilities. A film adaptation of the 2010 stage musical version of Matilda is now set to be produced and its creators are hoping to secure a stellar cast. Jodie Comer, best known as the evil Villanelle in BBC series Killing Eve, has been tipped to play Miss Honey. The producers had previously been looking at casting Emma Stone in the role, according to the Daily Mail, but Jodie is now the favourite for the part. If she does get it, the report adds, she'll be starring opposite Ralph Fiennes. The actor, who played Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, has been confirmed to play Miss Trunchbull, Matilda's monstrous school headmistress. It's understood that the new Matilda film will be released in cinemas before landing on Netflix - though that may not be for a while. Production was due to start this year but that's been pushed back due to the coronavirus outbreak. The movie is just one of a series of Roald Dahl adaptations Netflix is working on. Earlier this year the streaming service confirmed that it would be releasing two separate animated series based Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
