Later in the evening, the 23-year-old delivered another memorable thank you speech as he accepted the award for Song of the Year. “Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend who you can see every night on Love Island,” he said in a nod to Love Island's Paige Turley. “[The song] is actually about my grandma who passed away a few years ago," he explained, before quipping: “I hope Love Island don’t contact her to be on the show." He went on to say that the last year has been the best one of his life, as he thanked his label, his parents to thank the label and before adding one more thank you. "Thanks to my grandma for... dying? I’m sorry," he quipped, before heading off the stage.Lewis Capaldi downing a bottle of Red Stripe live on stage and getting his entire acceptance speech for Best New Artist muted is exactly what I needed to see ??? #Brits2020
