As we gear up for the highly anticipated fifth season of the dystopian series The Handmaid's Tale, it has been confirmed that the sixth season will be its last.
In a statement (via Digital Spy), the show's creator Bruce Miller spoke about the "honour" it has been to bring Margaret Atwood's novel to life.
He said: "It has been a true honour to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and the chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
"We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point."
A number of trailers have been released for the fifth season, and in them, the battle lines are drawn for June (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) to come face to face.
In the latest trailer, we see June reflecting on how she murdered Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), as she tells her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle): "He was a monster. The founding father of Gilead. He took away our country. He had to pay for what he did. I killed him and I loved it so much."
We also see Serena winning the support of the people of Gilead as she enters a mourning period for her husband. Aunt Lydia, meanwhile, continues to terrorise the women of Gilead.
The series lands on Hulu on 14 September, and while fans are gearing up for its return, many will notice the absence of Alexis Bledel, who played Emily Malek on the show.
In a statement shared earlier this year, Bledel said that she decided to "step away" from the show.
