Gwendoline Christie had to put herself forward for consideration for an Emmy - because HBO wouldn't.

The Game of Thrones actor, who played Brienne of Tarth in the series, wasn't chosen by the network for submission so she decided to do it herself instead. And, unsurprisingly, she got the nomination. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christie, Alfie Allen, and Carice Van Houten were not entered by HBO, so each of them decided to pay the $225 fee and submit themselves. Each of them were nominated for Emmys within their respective categories of best supporting actress, best supporting actor, and best guest actress in a drama series. HBO confirmed to the publication that they did not enter the three actors. However, it is not uncommon for networks to decide not to submit certain actors if they don't believe they will succeed in their category. Oftentimes, these actors will submit themselves to the Emmys for consideration. This rarely ends up in a nomination. And in this case, there were three. Game of Thrones is leading this year's Emmy nominations with a record-breaking 32 nods. The fantasy series' huge amount of nominations - which, according to Variety, are the most any program has received in a single season - have HBO with the most nominations by any platform this year. The network has a total of 137 nominations, while Netflix is in second place with 117.
