It seems like it truly is the era for long-awaited film sequels.
Donnie Darko is one of those iconic films that you don't forget in a hurry.
The 2001 film saw the story play out of troubled teen Donnie Darko struggling with the idea of the upcoming apocalypse, as foretold by his rabbit figure Frank and trying to place some meaning behind his troubling visions.
The dark and twisted sci-fi film both thrilled and chilled viewers upon its release, and as the years have gone by it's grown a serious cult status.
Considering such huge successful films as Trainspotting, Beaches, Ghostbusters and Splash all got reboots, it only seems fair that Donnie Darko follow suit.
Speaking to HMV, director of the film Richard Kelly spoke about possibly doing a sequel to follow the original film.
When asked about revisiting the world of Donnie, Richard said:
"I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything.
"Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it."
The film was originally released in 2001, so could a sequel about the characters being 20 years on motivate Richard and the gang to regroup in 2021?
We'll have to wait and see.
