Pass the tissues.

With the bank holiday weekend coming up you might be planning to have a movie night. If you are and are looking for film suggestions to watch we've come up with a list of five mother/daughter movies that always guaranteed to have us crying by the end.

1. Steel Magnolias (1989)

I spotted Steel Magnolias on Netflix last night and needless to say I was sobbing. The film is about the bond a group of women share in a small-town southern community, and how they cope with the death of one of their own. It also stars queen Dolly Parton, does it need anymore of a recommendation?

2. Stepmom (1998)

I can still remember renting this on VHS from the video shop and it has stuck with me all these years. Stepmom tells the story of Anna and Ben, the two children who must cope with the fact that their parents divorced and their father is now with successful photographer Isabel. The situation becomes even more harrowing when their mother is diagnosed with cancer. Honestly Susan Sarandon's line 'I have their past, and you can have their future.' gets me every time.

3. Little Women (1994)

There have been several adaptions of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women but the 1994 version will always be my favourite. With their father fighting in the American Civil War, sisters Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth are at home with their mother. There's additional heartbreak when Beth becomes ill after contracting Scarlet Fever. Whichever adaptions you watch, it's by and far one of the most classic mother and daughter tales.

4. Beaches (1988)

While Beaches is mainly the story of two life long friends and their trials and tribulations through life, it does heavily focus on mother and daughter relationships. From Hillary's mother dying at a young age and CC having a complicated relationship with her fame driven mother, their relationships with their mothers play a big role in the women they become. Then after having a daughter of her own Hillary must face the fact that she may end up dying after developing develops viral cardiomyopathy, leaving her daughter alone, just as she had been as a little girl. The scene where Hillary starts to panic about how her hands look because she can't remember if that's how her mother's hands looked before she died give me chills every time I watch it.

5. Mamma Mia 1&2 (2002/2018)

This is slightly a cheat as they are too separate movies but it's hard to include one without the other. While the first Mamma Mia movie is for the most part a comedy when I went to watch it in the cinema I absolutely bawled at the scene where Sophie's mum is getting her ready for her wedding while singing Slipping Through My Fingers. The sequel hit me like a ton of bricks and the scene at the Baptism had me in floods.
