Taylor Swift is urging her fans to be kind to her ex-boyfriend John Mayer ahead of the re-release of her album Speak Now.

Swift's complicated relationship with Mayer is one of the biggest inspirations for the songs on
Speak Now. However
, the singer stressed that what happened to her during this relationship isn't important anymore.

She addressed the pair's former relationship and the drama that has followed since their break-up during a recent concert.
Before singing
Dear John as a surprise song, Swift said: "I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote.
"I’m not putting this album out so that you should feel the need to defend me on the internet... against someone you think I might have written the song about 14 billion years ago."
The
Lavender Haze singer dated John Mayer from December 2009 to February 2010. The
Gravity singer has often come under fire for dating Swift when he was 32 and she was 19.
Speak Now (Taylor's Version) will be released on July 7th.
