As for Depp himself, despite his relationship having soured with Disney and the entertainment giant continuing to profit off of the character and his likeness despite dropping him from the franchise's sixth instalment - he had previously stated his desire to give characters "a proper goodbye".
Speaking during his testimony back in April, Depp confessed: "I planned on continuing until it was time to stop" but the allegations made by Heard meant that was turned from "Cinderella into Quasimodo" in terms of cache in the industry. Depp was rumoured to be due a payment just shy of £18m for the next film in the series.
So while Bruckheimer could not confirm anything beyond the fact that more Pirates films are coming, it seems plausible that both parties have an incentive for the situation to be resolved and for Captain Jack Sparrow to make another appearance - even if it is to be his last.
