"I have to look for the next step and I haven’t found it yet"

The actor, who is 60 in January, was speaking with Vanity Fair ahead of the release of his latest film, A24’s Dream Scenario, when he made revelations about the end of his career.

"I may have three or four more movies left in me," he said.

Cage went on to explain that he has said what he had to say "with cinema" and "took film performance as far" as he could.

“I want to say bye on a high note,” the Hollywood heavyweight went on to say. 

“I was taking stock of how much time I had left. I thought, ‘Okay, my dad died at 75, I’m going to be turning 60. 

"'If I’m lucky, I have maybe a good 15 years and hopefully more. What do I want to do with those 15 years, using my father as the model?'"

He then said the answer to this question "occurred very clearly."

The actor simply said "I want to spend time with my family". He has two sons, Weston, 32, and Kal-El, 18, from previous relationships and welcomed a daughter named August with his wife, Riko Shibata, last year.

He also hinted at an interest in the small screen and said: "Maybe it’s time to look at the immersive streaming experience. I don’t know.

"I have to look for the next step and I haven’t found it yet."

As for those final few films, the actor said he wants to be "more severe and stringent" in his selection process.

But he also wants "to look ahead," he added, "I want to see what’s next."
