Reality star Katie Price has opened up about why her son Harvey is taking weight loss injections.
The mum's son was born with Prader-Willi Syndrome, septo-optic dysplasia, and autism.
Prader–Willi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. It is caused by a loss of function of specific genes on chromosome 15.
The disorder can cause excessive appetite and overeating, which can easily lead to dangerous weight gain.
Harvey is now 22 years old and his mum wants him to live a "better, longer life" so he has started a course of weight loss medication.
In an interview with The Sun, Katie Price said her son now weighs 28 stone so the weight loss jobs are to protect his health.
Katie explained: "It’s really, really serious and life-changing for Harvey.
"He’s at risk of a heart attack, and because of his condition, he’s not getting any smaller," she said.
The mum explained that they did try alternative options before settling on weight loss injections.
She said they tried different diets and had consultations with dietitians but believes this is the best option for Harvey.
"He’s putting on weight. It doesn’t matter what we do. He can’t put his shoes on without sweating. He can’t walk far because he gets out of breath."
She said: "It’s because of all the weight. So the doctors are doing it to give him a better, longer life, and for his health."
Katie Price has been her son's full-time caregiver since he was born.
She welcomed her son Harvey with former footballer Dwight Yorke in May 2002. Harvey is Katie's first child.
