"I have to continually hustle"

The actress' words come after Taraji P. Henson's discussed the challenges she has experienced due to the cost of being in the public.

“I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ Well, I have to,” she said while on Gayle King’s Sirius XM show.

“The math ain’t math-ing. When you start working a lot, you have a team.

"Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone. It’s a whole team behind us. They have to get paid.”

I look at the money I am supposedly making and then it is not just the bills but what is expected of me when I show up at a place.

Phillipps shared the same sentiment as Henson, saying that the cost of beauty in the entertainment industry has become out of control.

“I have to continually hustle. It is so true," she told Page Six.

"With hair, makeup, and wardrobe and what it cost, Taraji P. Henson really spoke to that.

"I felt it so deeply because I look at the money I am supposedly making and then it is not just the bills but what is expected of me when I show up at a place."

What am I doing? Sometimes I think I should just show up a mess at one of these things as a protest.

The actress revealed that, for her, the film company or production company of a premiere, for example, only pays a certain amount for the guest's hair, makeup, and wardrobe, leaving them to make up the rest.

“So then you are a thousand dollars out of pocket and at the end of the day it’s like, ‘What am I doing?’ Sometimes I think I should just show up a mess at one of these things as a protest.”

If this kind of pressure is felt at the top, it's surely bound to trickle down

So much of the glam and fashion we see on celebrities on red carpets inspires our own, which you may or may not feel pressure to keep up with.

For me, I find the bulk of my earnings are spent buying new products and clothing that I don't necessarily need.

At least in the celebrity world, it's somewhat considered an investment that returns publicity.

For the everyday girl, being out of pocket because of the latest beauty and fashion trends has no real long-term advantage.

If celebrities can also feel this pressure, not only to be glam but also to pay for it, it begs the question: What/who do we put pressure on ourselves for?

Unbeknownst to us, it seems, we may also be buying the financial burden the celebrity is dressed and glammed up in.

While red carpet glam isn't exactly the everyday girl's to-do list, Phillipps and Henson have shared an interesting revelation about beauty and fashion standards: They come at, potentially, way too high a cost, especially if notable actresses like them also feel the financial pinch.

If Phillipps decides to protest glam, we'll welcome it with open arms.
