If you are looking to give your home a refresh this autumn, interior experts have revealed the one trend everyone is loving right now – and we got to admit, we totally get it. The trend experts at Wethrift have analysed Pinterest data to uncover the most popular interior trends as we approach the new season, and one style really stood out. According to Pinterest, searches for the term 'modern farmhouse' has increased by 316 percent(!) over the past few months. Nick Drewe, trend expert at WeThrift, explains: “Farmhouse interiors are easy to replicate, and people are incorporating the trend with a modern approach throughout the home, with minimalist elements that resemble Scandinavian design."

Cosy, clean and uncluttered

According to Amy Long at Modern Farmhouse Glam, the reason why modern farmhouse is one of today’s most popular design styles are many. "It mixes the cosy, welcoming feel of a farmhouse with the clean, uncluttered look of modern design," Long explains. "Elements could include neutral colour palettes, metals and woods, and a combination of textures. It has a soothing and inviting feel, and makes you immediately feel welcome, comfortable, and relaxed.

How to get that modern farmhouse look

Fancy getting in on the modern farmhouse aestethic yourself? If you were to step through the front door of a home decorated in modern farmhouse style, you’d probably notice that the colour palette is neutral, the furniture is comfortable with clean lines and the vibe is welcoming, yet sleek – and the accessories are made of natural materials. A modern farmhouse also includes the following design features:

• Reclaimed wood
• Shiplap or board and batten on the walls
• Brick details, either lime-washed or in their natural red colour
• White, beige, or grey furniture
• Midcentury-style chairs
• Wide-plank hardwood floors
• White granite or marble countertop
• Grain sack, ticking stripe, or gingham fabric
• An apron sink (sometimes called a farmhouse sink) in the kitchen
• Pendant lights

Some experts believe the reason we are all falling in love with farmhouse-style interiors has to do with the lockdowns and the great exodus from the city to the country over the past two years. The rural lifestyle has been almost fetishised since the start of the pandemic. And although not everyone will want to take on a working farm when they ­relocate, the idea of living in a former farmhouse, with the clean air and ­outdoor pursuits that entails, has never been more appealing. According to Sarah-Jane Bingham-Chick of estate agents Savills in the UK, demand for rural properties remains “through the roof”, particularly those, like farmhouses, with a significant amount of outdoor space. “Most of those that are no longer part of a working farm have already been updated, modernised or extended, so they work really well for family living,” she points out.
