Take all my money. Back to the future fans will be rejoicing worldwide today with the news that the self-lacing shoe is finally a thing. The HyperAdapt 1.0 has been developed by Nike and unveiled it at this week's Nike Innovation Summit. It’s the first shoe to use self-lacing technology, something Nike believe will be a game-changer for trainers. “When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” explains Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator, NIKE, Inc., and the project’s technical lead. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.” And while the shoes may have been inspired by Back to The Future, the design is geared towards improving performance for athletes. “It is amazing to consider a shoe that senses what the body needs in real-time. That eliminates a multitude of distractions, including mental attrition, and thus truly benefits performance,” says Tinker Hatfield.
