Recycling, re-purposing, being mindful of what we buy and consume – it all matters. And right now, Brown Thomas Arnotts – one business, two iconic Irish retail brands – are making it easier for shoppers to have a lighter footprint on our planet.
In a first here in Ireland, Brown Thomas Arnotts (BTA) has announced its commitment to significantly accelerate its target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its business by 2040, making them the first Irish retailer to sign The Climate Pledge, a cross-sector collaboration co-founded by Global Optimism.
The organisation encourages multinational and domestic businesses to act on the climate emergency ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement target date of 2050.
As a signatory of the Climate Pledge, Brown Thomas Arnotts will:
- Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.
- Implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business change and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
- Take actions to neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

The homegrown retailer is already known nationally for their commitment to sustainable retail.
In June 2020, the company was the first Irish retailer to have its carbon reduction targets approved by the Science Based Target initiative, consistent with actions required to keep global warming to 1.5°C. And by the end of 2021, all its stores will be ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ accredited.
