Claire Thompson, Senior Wedding Consultant at The Wedding Travel Company said the dress code will differ depending on the event.

Is it ever OK to wear white (or off-white) to a wedding?

She explained that every couple will have their own dress code, but wearing white is typically frowned upon.

“Often when attending a destination wedding, particularly in destinations such as Greece, Italy and Cyprus, it can be tempting for guests to lean towards white and pale shades for their outfits.

"Wearing pale colours and lightweight materials can be great when trying to stay cool; however, be cautious and be sure to follow the wedding theme where possible.

“There is no clear-cut, right or wrong answer when it comes to what wedding guests can wear. The dress code of the day often differs depending on the preferences of the bride, as many set a colour theme for guests to follow on the day. 

“When attending a wedding without a dress code, it is usually wise to assume white, off-white, or cream is off limits. A simple rule of thumb is to avoid any shades that could be seen as resembling a wedding dress, whether that be the shade or style of the dress," Claire said.

Wedding guests should avoid wearing white or off-white outfits even to less traditional celebrations.

What are the rules around wearing pale colours as a wedding guest? (Blue, yellow, green etc)

“Pale colours at weddings are particularly popular, especially with those having spring, summer or destination weddings. Though these are perfectly acceptable to wear to a wedding, there are some things to be cautious about.

“When choosing your wedding guest outfit, always stick to the theme the bride and groom have set. If they haven’t specified, then a pale blue, green, lilac or pink shade is usually a safe option. However, be aware that many brides often wear pale, pastel shades for their bridesmaids' dresses, so choosing a dress in the same or similar colour could cause embarrassment on the day.

“Butter yellow has been the colour of the season, with many brands jumping on the trend, offering occasion dresses in the creamy shade. Whether pale yellow is acceptable for weddings is completely at the discretion of the bride and/or groom. Where possible, choose a slightly brighter yellow shade that can’t be mistaken for cream.

“The style of the dress can make a huge difference when it comes to how acceptable the shade is. If the dress you are wearing could also be worn as a bridesmaid dress, you may be dangerously close to matching with a member of the wedding party. To avoid any awkwardness, speak to the bride to ask her what colour her bridesmaids are wearing."
