There's a billion and one wedding traditions couple can choose to follow (or not to follow) on their wedding day. But over the last few years, there's been a new one tradition emerging in Ireland for when it comes time to take the photos: the first look. One of the most common and long-held traditions is that the soon-to-be newlyweds shouldn't see each other before walking down the aisle at the ceremony. The first look photos are a chance for the couple to see each other before the ceremony, as well as to get some (or all) of their portraits taken before the festivities begin. And, since you've started planning your wedding, chances are you've been asked whether or not you're considering doing the same at least once or twice. But to do a first look or not to? That's really the question. So, here's three reasons to consider doing a first look.

It will help soothe any pre-wedding jitters

Some couples who opt for a first look credit one (or both) of them being a bit nervous as the reason they chose to do it. Even the most relaxed newly-wed-to-be can get wedding day jitters, whether it's because of excitement, nervousness or simply being terrified that you're going to fall on your face as you walk down the aisle. But there's nobody better to see in the lead up to the ceremony than the person going through it with you. Plus, if you're worried there will be tears shed when you do see each other, that's not really a problem when it's only the two of you.

You get to enjoy one of the biggest (and most romantic) moments of your wedding day together

The big reveal can be one of the most romantic moments of your whole wedding day - so it's no wonder that some couples would rather experience that together, and in private. While you may have to touch up your makeup afterwards, having a few minutes together before everything gets going can be key to a relaxed day. After all, chances are that the one person you'll want to spend the most time with on your wedding day is your other half. But once the day gets going, you may both find yourselves being pulled in a million and one directions by friends, family members and well-wishing guests. And you'll still get your big reveal, as there's the reaction of the wedding guests when the bride walks down the aisle.

You'll have even more time for photos

The typical order of a  wedding day usually sees the photo session together come after the ceremony, which can put you on a  bit of a clock. After all, you probably want to enjoy your cocktail hour with your guests - and you definitely don't want to leave them standing around and waiting for you all day. And, if you're having a bridal party, it can be tough enough to rally them to take snaps once the festivities get going, which may eat into the time for the newlyweds to get their photos done. If you have a first look before the ceremony, you'll have more time to catch all the stunning snaps you want (and still make it to the ceremony on time, of course).
