Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for three counties today ahead of the arrival of Storm Arwen. The wind warning is in place for Donegal, Mayo and Sligo and it commences at 3pm. Meanwhile, the UK Met Office has issued a Status Weather wind warning for Northern Ireland which has been in effect since 9am today. The Northern Ireland weather warning will remain in place for today and tomorrow, while the warnings for Donegal, Mayo and Sligo are in place until tonight. According to Met Éireann, the gusts will peak this afternoon, and there is a chance that strong winds will bring down trees with potential power and travel disruption on the cards. Gusts of up to 110km/h are expected in the affected regions. The temperature will stay between 4 and 9 degrees. The effects of Storm Arwen will be felt elsewhere in the country with widespread showers and a possibility of sleet and snow on higher grounds. Commenting on the incoming storm, Met Éireann's Elizabeth Coleman said: "It’s going to be a cold and very windy day on Friday. We’ll see north to northwest winds starting to pick up through Thursday night into Friday morning, peaking late Friday afternoon." She continued: "Gale to strong gale force winds are forecast along north facing coasts, generating large coastal waves and spray overtopping. Strong northerly winds over land in the north and northwest could bring down some trees and power lines with travel disruption possible." Tonight, meanwhile, will be cold with temperatures expected to fall below freezing in many areas.
