A woman has sadly passed away while swimming off the coast of Killiney beach. The woman was aged in her 60s. Her body was found at around 11 am on Thursday, January 5th. The woman's family reported her missing on Tuesday night. A two-day search operation was then carried out, but sadly the woman's body was discovered by the Dun Laoghaire RNLI. Her body was removed from the water and then transported to Loughlinstown Mortuary. A post-mortem has taken place. The search was carried out by Dún Laoghaire RNLI. The Coast Guard and Rescue 116 also assisted. The Irish Coast Guard issued a statement following the discovery. A spokesperson told The Independent; “The Dún Laoghaire coast guard unit assisted the RNLI with recovering the casualty,” said a spokesman for the Irish Coast Guard. “The Irish Coast Guard coordinated the search and rescue for the casualty with Rescue 116, the Dún Laoghaire RNLI and the Dún Laoghaire-based coast guard unit, with assistance from An Garda Síochana." It is believed the woman, who has not yet been named, was a regular sea swimmer. The Irish Coast Guard is urging swimmers to never swim alone following the harrowing incident. It has also advised long-distance sea swimmers to carry a swim buoy or something similar with them in case of emergency. The Irish Coast Guard has reminded the public to contact 112/999 if they see anyone struggling in the water. You can also contact VHF channel 16 and ask for the Coast Guard.
