A whale that was seen swimming in the River Liffey this week has died.
The whale was spotted in the river on Wednesday and was later identified as a fin whale.
It was found dead this morning in Dublin Bay by port workers.
RTE News reports that the whale, which was about 25 feet long, had been thought to be a juvenile.
It was first seen midweek swimming near to Dublin Bay.
The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group said that it was uncommon to see such a whale so close to the city.
"While it could be a minke, it could as easily be any of a suite of whales such as a juvenile fin or sei whale or even a northern bottlenose whale," they said on Facebook.
"So best to wait till we have more facts or video evidence before making any pronouncements on its species."
Mammal experts have been brought into Dublin Port to assess the situation following the whale's death.
It is currently understood that the mammal's remains could be left at sea.
