Two-year-old boy only slightly injured after climbing into airport baggage drop

A two-year-old boy was only slightly injured after climbing onto an airport carousel and getting sucked into the baggage drop. The toddler's mother said she looked away for "a second" to print her boarding pass, when the child ran past the counter and climbed onto the carousel. He then entered the baggage system and travelled along the conveyor belt until he was rescued by a member of staff at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. NBC News reports that the boy's mother told a member of staff that her child had climbed onto the belt. The employee, however, said they didn't see anything happen. Airport CCTV shows the boy travelling through the baggage system, attempting to crawl back towards the main airport. He struggles to climb over a purple suitcase, however, and then simply goes along for the ride. Once the boy reaches the Transport Security Administration (TSA) area of the baggage drop, he is immediately noticed by staff who come to his rescue. Spirit Airlines issued a statement last week confirming the incident where "an unattended child passed by a section of our ticket counter that was not staffed or open at the time."

"We are currently working with TSA and airport officials to ensure all protocol was followed. We wish the child the best in their recovery."

An Atlanta police report states that the boy was treated for a "severely swollen and bruised" right hand before being taken to hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery. You can watch the video of the toddler's baggage drop journey here.
