The threat of insolvency may result in Iarnród Éireann being forced to close down a number of Irish train stations and routes, according to a report in The Irish Times.
A draft report was given to the Minister for Transport Shane Ross which stated that an investment of €600 million is required over the next five years to offset the deteriorating infrastructure of Ireland's train stations and routes.
According to this report in The Irish Times., only the Dart, Dublin and Cork commuter routes and inter-city services from Dublin to Cork, Belfast and Limerick will remain operational.
Even with additional investment, the routes from Limerick- Ballybrophy and Limerick Junction- Waterford are facing a very severe risk of closure.
Other routes that are in jeopardy include the following; the Limerick-Galway line from Ennis to Athenry, and the Wexford line south of Gorey.
The report states that Iarnród Éireann have accumulated loses of €150 million between 2007 and 2015, mainly due to a lack of State funding and reduced demand from the public.
