Mass killings in Aleppo this week have ensured the city's place in history alongside other travesties such as Srebrenica, Halabja and Rwanda.
Over the past several years, millions of Syrians have fled their homes in order to escape the wide-scale violence and civil war that has plagued their country.
Some of those refugees have this week found a home in Ireland, and Syrian-American photographer Thawab Thawabi was at Dublin Airport to catch the miraculous moment that Syrian woman Khoula was reunited with her family.
The photo captures the moment that Khoula embraces her younger brother at Arrivals. The relief and emotion on her face is overwhelming.
Similarly, the Gardaí have celebrated the arrival of a Syrian family to the town of Westport in Co. Mayo. The Garda Info Twitter account tweeted on Saturday morning: "Gda McNamara welcomes a newly arrived Syrian family to town of Westport, offering every assistance to them as they settle in to new home."
