Mr Avery has now been behind bars for 15 years.

Steven Avery's lawyer has said that the legal team has made "substantial progress"in his bid for freedom. Mr Avery was convicted for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, but he has long maintained his innocence. He has stated that he was framed by the Manitowac County Police Department. In 2007, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole after a jury found him guilty. He has been behind bars for 15 years now. The case was the subject of the hugely popular Netflix true crime series Making A Murderer. Earlier this week, his lawyer Kathleen Zellner took to Twitter to share an update in the case, and labelled the sentence a "miscarriage of justice". She wrote: "We are working every day on Steven Avery’s case and we are making substantial progress. We will never give up in our quest to rectify this miscarriage of justice. #TruthWins @MakingAMurderer." The tweet marked 15 years to the day since the initial sentencing. https://twitter.com/ZellnerLaw/status/1504492354132185095 Prior to the Teresa Halbach case, Mr Avery was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder in a different case. He was subsequently released. His nephew, 32-year-old Brendan Dassey, was also convicted for the murder and remains in prison after what many considered a false and coerced confession. Earlier this year, Ms Zellner said that her team are still working on proving Mr Avery's innocence. In January, she tweeted: "Just in case any of you are wondering we are working as hard as ever on Steven Avery’s case. We will be filing a new petition with a huge amount of new evidence. We will never give up pounding on the doors of justice for him #TruthWins." These updates follow the emergence of new evidence last year. In April, a delivery driver came forward and said they had seen Bobby Dassey (Brendan's brother) with an unknown bearded man in his 50s-60s pushing a Toyota RAV-4 (the car Teresa Halbach was driving the day of her disappearance) onto the Avery property in the early hours of 5 November 2005. At the end of Making A Murderer season two, Bobby Dassey became a person of interest when Zellner discovered violent and indecent pornography on his computer. This groundbreaking witness statement now places him at the scene of the crime. Next, Brad Dassey, who is Brendan and Bobby's half-brother, spoke out about how he believed his uncle Steven was innocent. He suspected that his step-mother, Barb Tadych, might have something to do with the case and had wiped Bobby's laptop before it was seized by authorities.
