School uniforms for children are now being sold with 50 inch waistlines in Ireland. The trousers are meant to cater for children who are considered obese.
According to the Irish Independent, one in four Irish children is now overweight or obese. Uniform suppliers have been responding to this by increasing the size of shirt collars, bust width and waist.
One particular shop owner in Arklow told the Irish Independent: "We also have uniform kilts for girls up to 38 inches - we'd sell a few of those each year."
"I've provided for children in primary school with 38 inch waists. I had a child one year looking for a 40-inch, and another some years ago with a 44-inch waist."
On top of the above, it is also being reported that different schools are being forced to make specially made tables and chairs.
Safefood claim that parents find it difficult to recognise their child's weight is not healthy and a continued stress point, many children are not meeting dietary recommendations for fruit and vegetables.
This in turn can cause problems with the child's health which can result in the child being obese in later years.
