"Emergency services are responding to a hazardous material incident."
Worthing pier has been evacuated following an apparent chemical spill that left people vomiting and with sore eyes.
The west Sussex pier was cordoned off by emergency services this afternoon as authorities dealt with the "hazardous material incident."
Multiple people reported vomiting and having sore eyes as a result of the spill.
Residents and people staying in the area were told to stay indoors and close all doors and windows.
"Emergency services are responding to a hazardous material incident in Worthing," a spokesperson for Sussex Police said.
"A cordon has been set up along the seafront between Grand Avenue and Windsor Road, and people are being advised to shut all windows and doors, or stay away from the area.
"A small number of people have reported symptoms including sore eyes and vomiting."
Authorities have said they will provide more information in due course.
