Netflix have acquired the worldwide rights to Kitty Green’s upcoming documentary, Casting JonBenet, which is a stylized exploration of one of the most infamous child-murder cases, the still unsolved death of six-year-old American beauty queen, JonBenét Ramsey.
In 1996, the Colorado police found JonBenét 's body in the basement of the family's home, eight hours after she had been reported missing. The little girl was struck on the head and strangled. Her killer still remains at large.
The documentary will begin with the 9-1-1 call that sparked the investigation into Ramsey’s death, and it will examine the suspicious circumstances surrounding the involvement of her family.
After years of media speculation and public fascination, audiences will be presented with a documentary hybrid that examines the macabre legacy of this tiny starlet.
Over 15 months, the filmmakers traveled to the Ramseys’ Colorado hometown to elicit responses, reflections and even performances from the local community. In doing so, Casting JonBenet examines how this crime and its resulting mythologies have shaped the attitudes and behavior of successive generations of parents and children.
Before the film arrives on Netflix, it's set to premiere in the US Documentary Competition at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival; the first time that a nonfiction work from the online streaming giant will compete.
The film will launch on Netflix and in Spring of 2017, but if you can't wait until then, these riveting documentaries should hold you over.
