Mary Coyne from Co Roscommon passed away yesterday in her 109th year. She was a resident of the Áras Mháthair Phóil Community Nursing Unit in Castlerea.
The mother-of-two, grandmother, and great-grandmother hailed from the small town of Rathbarna near Castlerea.
She had received the centenarian medal from President Michael D Higgins eight years prior.
When interviewed by a reporter on her 100th birthday, Coyne said that the key to her longevity was "taking life one day at a time."
Her funeral will take place this Wednesday at St Patrick's Church in Castlerea.
