The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.
INMO members voted today on whether to support strike action due to pay issues and staff recruitment and shortages.
95 percent of members voted in favour of industrial action.
RTE reports that union executive will meet early next month to decide when the strike action will take place. Multiple 24-hour stoppages are expected to occur.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said that Ireland's nurses and midwives are "speaking with one clear voice."
"This vote reflects a deep frustration in our professions, which the government cannot continue to ignore," she said.
"Nurses and midwives simply want to do their jobs and care for patients properly. But low pay has led to staff shortages, compromising safe care."
This is the second time that INMO have opted to take strike action in history.
