The deeply tragic accident occurred on December 31.

After a record-breaking year for road safety on Irish roads, three young people lost their lives in a Co Meath car crash on New Year's Eve that also left three children injured. According to the Irish Independent, the collision happened on the N52 slip road in Kells, just off the M3 motorway, at around 4.45 pm on New Year’s Eve, with a female driver of one of the cars pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the same car, a man also aged in his 20s, was treated at the scene and died while on the way to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown. Tragically, a third person, a young woman also aged in her 20s, who was driving the second vehicle, was brought to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown to be treated for her injuries, but later died.

However, one “miracle” outcome from the triple tragedy was the survival of a three-week-old baby girl, who was a front-seat passenger in one of the cars involved. The infant suffered only minor injuries in the accident, while her sister, aged one, who was in the back seat alongside their 12-year-old brother, received – according to reports – serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the two-car collision. The boy, aged 12, suffered more serious injuries and was transferred from the Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda to Temple Street Children’s Hospital. However, while his injuries were more severe than his sisters', he is expected to survive too.
