NPHET are set to meet today.
An Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that he does not anticipate "major changes" to current Covid-19 restrictions.
RTÉ reports that following the first Cabinet meeting, Mr Martin said: "We don't anticipate any major changes to the current set of restrictions but that's a matter for NPHET."
The Fianna Fáil leader praised the public for adapting to the latest set of restrictions, and said that their behaviour is "having an impact".
He did indicate that a decision regarding further Covid-19 measures will be made after NPHET's meeting today.
Mr Martin said yesterday: "I don't want to pre-empt what NPHET will do in terms of its decision on Thursday, but suffice to say they will take a decision."
He continued: "It seems that the overall picture right now is that the current set of restrictions that had been in place are effective.
"It remains to be seen whether public health wish to advise any further in relation to that, but the indications are it'll be steady as she goes."
With regards to the reopening of schools, An Taoiseach indicated that they will re-open.
He said: "There will be challenges, but collectively we will work our way through this."
Mr Martin also said that it's unlikely we've seen the latest surge of cases peak.
"There will be challenging number of weeks in January," he said. "The next week or 10 days will give us more evidence in terms of the impact of this variant on the severity of illness."
Yesterday, the Cabinet agreed to remove the requirement for
vaccinated passengers to produce a negative PCR and antigen test on arrival into Ireland.
They will still need to show their EU Digital Covid Cert. The new rule change was brought to ministers this morning after advice was given by Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.
