BBC News reports that Petit, who is 28-years-old, has appeared for a hearing and will be held in police custody until his trial.
Prosecutors have said that their evidence against Petit includes messages that he sent after Miller's body was discovered last year.
"Most likely I will die in jail," read one of the messages.
If found guilty of distribution, Petit could spend up to 20 years in prison.
