Passengers affected by the Irish Rail strike will be able to avail of half-price fares from Irish e-hailing company mytaxi on Wednesday, the first of five planned days of strike action. An estimated 155,000 people will be affected by disruptions to DART, Intercity and commuter rail services, with National Bus and Rail Union general secretary Dermot O’Leary saying that he was pessimistic about the chances of finding “any viable alternative” to the strike by Wednesday. On the first day of the planned strike action, mytaxi is urging customers to plan ahead and travel off-peak hours to avoid commuting delays. To encourage travelling outside peak hours and skipping rush-hour delays, mytaxi customers will be able to get 50% off card payments between 5am and 7am. The discount will be automatically applied to all card payments, when hailing a cab and travelling within County Dublin. Tim Arnold, General Manager of mytaxi Ireland, said: “Demand for our services tends to spike during transport strikes like this and we expect a sharp increase during peak hours tomorrow. “We are already seeing unprecedented demand from our customers – so to help them side-step delays and inconvenience, we’re encouraging passengers to travel off-peak between 5am and 7am where possible and get 50% off their taxi fare on us. “It’s going to be a difficult day for many Dublin commuters – this is our way of helping them avoid the hassle at the beginning of a busy work day.” Full details of the promotion can be found here.
