An Irish citizen has been named as a man being held by a group fighting ISIS.
The man, who has an Irish passport, was named as being captured by militias fighting the radical group in Syria.
Gardaí have said the man was known to them due to their monitoring of individuals who are sympathetic to radical causes.
RTE reports that the man, who is 45-years-old, left his family to move to the Middle East in 2013.
Originally from Belarus, he had lived and worked in Ireland for a number of years before making the move.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that he was aware of the situation but that he could not "comment on it in any detail."
He added that the man, like all Irish citizens, is entitled to consular assistance.
