A 9-year-old girl has accidentally shot and killed an instructor at an Arizona firing range.
Authorities confirmed that the child was learning to fire a submachine gun when the weapon recoiled over her shoulder. Her instructor, 39-year-old Charles Vacca, took a bullet to the head. He was airlifted to University Medical Centre in Las Vegas, but died in hospital late Monday night.
The girl was with her parents at shooting range Bullets and Burgers, Arizona Last Stop when the accident happened. According to the company's website, children from 8 to 17 can shoot if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The young girl was operating an Uzu at the time.
The horrific accent was captured on a mobile phone, with footage taken moments before the fatal shots were fired later released by authorities.
Sam Scarmardo, who operates Arizona Last Stop, said: "We really don't know what happened."
"Our guys are trained to basically hover over people when they're shooting. If they're shooting right-handed, we have our right-hand behind them ready to push the weapon out of the way. And if they're left-handed, the same thing."
Scarmardo said Vacca was "a great guy, with a great sense of humor" and described him as "very conscientious and very professional."
