Figures obtained by the Sunday Independent have revealed that the the rank-and-file Garda who made the most money through overtime in the last year earned no less than €62,996 in overtime alone, effectively tripling their salary.
Both second and third on the list earned €51,141 and €50,587 respectively. The Garda overtime expenditure bill has risen by roughly €30million since 2012, costing the state €71million this year — thanks in large part to the extra resources devoted to combating 2016's increase in gangland activity.
The outlay of the Dublin Metropolitan North Central Division specifically rose from €5.2million to €8.2million in the last 12 months alone.
Combined, the top 20 overtime payments for 2016 almost reached a million euro — totalling at €931,582.
