A five-year-old boy has died after an accident involving a tractor in a townland near Ferbane, Co Offaly.
Liam Lyons had been helping his father Eoin on his uncle's farm when the accident happened. He had jumped off the tractor, driven by his father, to chase a number of pheasants in the machine's path.
According to the Irish Mirror, the little boy lay down in the field and was invisible to his father as he came around the next lap of the field.
Liam was airlifted to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore where he was later pronounced dead.
Local Fine Gael councillor John Clendennon said: “This is a tragic shock for all the community. The family are well loved and respected. Our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult time.”
A Garda investigation has been launched in addition to an inquiry by the HSA (Health and Safety Authority), which is standard when a death occurs at a place of work.
